Good grief... BICYCLES?
Those things'll kill ya. Get yourself a good, safe V-Twin.
But, Joe, between life-threatening crashes, it delivers me from both boredom and turning into a big fat pig. Also, I tend to have a short memory for pain.
For boredom, try 75mph along an ocean highway at sunrise (sunset in California) on a VTX1300.
As for the big fat pig stuff... free weights, pull-up bar, treadmill and a 50-inch LCD screen. I've got a terrific interval workout that takes only 22 minutes. I do it on the treadmill, but it's just as effective in the pool, on an elliptical or out on a bike or running trail. Sorry to hear of your loss. Your uncle lived an extraordinary life. In NYC we had Father Hardy who set up a boxing gym in the church basement where he trained us for Golden Gloves. I won my first two sub-novice fights by close decisions. I'm told that I lost my third bout by knockout, but I don't remember a thing.
A San Diego friend took me on coastal highways in his Lotus. He took five years off my life. The bike crash only broke 2 ribs.
Your indoor training system sounds pretty good, though. Great to hear about your church boxing lessons. Nice story. There are lots of ways to make a difference in lives. I didn't learn to box and found out how little I knew about it when a Puerto Rican half my size pounded me to a pulp in a bare-knuckles fight in the South Bronx. It was late night entertainment in St Ann's Park. I thought the fight wasn't going to be fair because I was 19, he was 16; I was a football jock, he was a dropout. The only thing I was right about is that it wasn't fair...and like you, I don't remember exactly what happened.
Tedd,
Ouch! I hate it when that happens. There is a song playing on country music stations right now bya group called Lonestar named "My Front Porch Looking In. Some of the lyrics are: I've seen the paintings from the air Brushed by the hand of God The mountains and the canyons reach from sea to shining sea But I can't wait to get back home To the one he made for me It's anywhere I'll ever go and everywhere I've been Nothing takes my breath away Like my front porch looking in Titus
Only two broken ribs?
I'll double you up on the ribs and raise you a cracked collarbone. Medium speed crack-up on a wet railroad crossing. Slud along the pavement until I used a telephone pole for brakes. Slept in a recliner for two months and couln't swing a golf club for three. Silver lining: I hit my irons ten yards longer. The orthopedist says it's because my left clavicle is now 3/4 of an inch longer. My '84 Honda only needed some bolt-on parts so it had a much shorter convalescence. We were in North Carolina last week looking at homes and building lots. When I asked the developer if I could have a factory-built home built on a lot in the "custom" area he bristled: "We don't allow trailers." When I explained reality to him he informed us that the codes only allow stick-built construction by local builders. I give you a lot of credit for butting heads with these Luddites for so many years.
Tedd-
Sorry to hear about the ribs- painful injury, but if you had punctured a lung, a chest tube is murder! I left the building trade 15 yrs. ago after participating in the construction of too many ephemeral beach mansions on the shifting sands of a NC barrier island. Still miss the work- I get my fix following discussions like yours! Joe's comments about Luddite builders are dead on. My elderly neighbor just spent $36,000 replacing rotten floor joists in the home her architect husband built in 1981. But, her contractor didn't do a thing to change the crawl space design! Not sure why people will put up with an inefficient, undependable and poorly constructed house, but would raise hell if their car was built to similar (dismal) standards. Looking forward to your thoughts on how to move forward. Karl Greenville, NC |
